Adult Novelty Biz Booms

Contrary to popular belief, the adult entertainment industry is recession proof, heck if anything it is growing by the minute. First & foremost, more people, particularly women, are more open minded nowadays than they were back in the day. Now, due to the economy and people not going out as much anymore, they're staying home a lot more, so they need something to do, right? Well, what better! ;-) Just like the gaming industry has grown immensely. And let's not get started with how many couples are popping out babies left & right.
Adult novelties are in the midst of a renaissance.
Although, on the other hand, despite high unemployment rates and shoestring household budgets, America continues to find money in its pocket for sex toys. If you’re in a relationship, you need to spend more time with your partner and this often leads to wanting to rekindle or enhance a sexual relationship. In a recession, people are seeing that sex is a way to not spend a lot of money. If you buy a sex toy for $150, that’s going to buy you a lot more entertainment in the long run than a dinner or show. That $150 price tag might surprise some people. While certainly there are hundreds, probably thousands of toys that cost significantly less, the best sellers in the current economy are high end items.

While they were considered taboo for years, sex toys burst onto the mainstream scene on Aug. 2, 1998. That’s the night a “Sex & The City” episode immortalized “the rabbit” creating a rush of demand for the device and making it more acceptable for people to shop for sex toys. On that note, I don't know how many phone calls I would get & how many requests I would get for that particular product. Which was & still is a very popular product to say the least. But since then, other companies came out with their own version of the infamous Rabbit. I have personally seen others that have been better for so many reasons, that have sold like crazy, just because it's similar. But don't get me wrong "The Rabbit" has improved throughout the years. Now for the same reason behind the marketing of toys and/or products, two others that made it to Hollywood, In "Burning After Reading," George Clooney plays a sex addict who carries around the "The Liberator Ramp" and a vibrator called "The Silky." Then there is the mechanically enhanced underthings that deliver Katherine Heigl — and with her, millions of delighted moviegoers — into big-screen ecstasy. (Indeed, virtually everyone already knows the film as “The One With the Vibrating Panties.”) All the products mentioned were truthfully the stars of the show & in my opinion, as a sex critic they should have been the ones winning Oscars. ;-) Popular items that were flying of the shelves & could never be fully stocked, always selling out. Some would just be disappointed the actors didn't come with them. ;-)

While the current business surge among sex toys isn’t quite that strong, it’s notable. Sex toy stores such as A Touch of Romance & Hustler of Hollywood (2 very high profile stores in LA area) & others across the country, were indicating how much sales & customer flow had increased by at least 20% in the first half of the year. Business owners were ecstatic, to say the least.

“What we’ve found across the industry is that while the traditional old ‘dirty book store’ seems to not be doing so well, the ones that cater to couples and females are doing quite well,” says Keith Caggiano of Bushman Products.

Some adult toy makers are doing even better. Lelo, a high-end designer and manufacturer of adult novelties, has seen its business double every month this year.

Consumers, say manufacturers and retailers, are willing to pay more for a few reasons. Some feel the high end products are more effective than their cut-rate counterparts. Others buy into the high-end marketing. But a large percentage are willing to pay more, considerably more, for a product that will stand the test of time. Quality is most important is it not. Think of them like Coach in the toyland. ;-) People were so ashamed to buy them in the first place, that [the toy] could break and no one would complain. Now that sex toys are going mainstream, the consumer expects a certain level of quality from manufacturers and they’re getting quality. Manufacturers are learning a lesson from traditional retailers and making their products more aesthetically pleasing. Just as Target offers a coffeemaker designed by Michael Graves, many of today’s sex toys have a form factor that’s different than many people expect.

That’s particularly true at Lelo, which puts an increased focus on design. The company’s devices, which are rechargeable and offer warranties of up to 10 years, are so atypical looking that they’re carried in select mainstream stores. “We’re getting more and more inquiries on a regular basis,” says Donna Faro, Lelo’s U.S. sales manager. “The biggest interest in mainstream accounts is in the ladies lingerie high-end boutiques. We’re getting extremely high exposure in that market.”

While design is helping increase interest in sex toys, the general public is also always hungry for new trends. Here @ Melb's Love Lounge, I will continue to feed you the best there is ;-)

What are sex toys?

Sex toys can be an exciting way to spice up your sexual life, whether using them by yourself or with others. There are many misconceptions that sex toys are only used by people who choose to remain abstinent, do not currently have sexual partners, or by gay men and lesbians. The truth is, people of all types use sex toys. Some choose to use them when they are alone, on their sexual partners, or on themselves while partners are present.

How can I bring sex toys into my relationship?

Sometimes it’s hard to communicate our sexual desires to our partners, especially when wanting to bring something new into a sexual relationship. Some people may feel threatened by the thought of having sex toys added to their sexual life or they have stereotypes about who uses sex toys. Honesty and open communication are the best strategies for talking with sexual partners about sex toys. Your partner needs to understand where you’re coming from, what you’re interested in doing, and how you will respect their boundaries, in order for sex toys to be a healthy, pleasurable part of your relationship.
